WoodnLuxury answers: Our top requests for home bar customization

One of the questions we often get from some prospective customers is: “What do people usually want to modify about their bars?” This question is basically a conversation starter with us for customization ideas. Most customers already know what style of bar works in their space, what matches their décor, and what fits their taste. Bars, like any furniture, usually fall under two broad styles: modern or traditional. Modern bars might feature materials like metal, glass, or even brick – typically smaller in size, with sleek lines and bold colors. Traditional bars make a different statement: these could be elegant art-deco pieces, cozy English pub-style bars, or impressive antique Brunswick models.

Once you’ve picked a bar style that speaks to you, the fun part begins. You can start thinking about all the details to make it perfect for your home. Here’s a list of the most common elements our customers love to customize in their home bars:

1. Design (Bar Shape).
Is your bar going to be a straight-front unit, or perhaps an L-shaped, C-shaped, or U-shaped design? Picking the shape is one of the first big decisions. It’s all about making sure the bar fits your space and how you plan to entertain. For example, some homeowners with a corner spot often choose an L-shape to nestle nicely against the walls, while others with more space might go all out with a wraparound U-shaped bar for maximum seating and serving area.

2. Dimensions.
Once the shape is decided, it’s time to fine-tune the size. Measure your available space carefully and think about how people will move around. Make sure to leave enough room for both the bartender and guests to walk behind or around the bar comfortably. If your space is limited, you might skip the back bar (the shelf or hutch area behind the main counter) or opt for a narrower front bar to save room. The goal is to make your bar inviting without feeling cramped. (Read here about the recommended dimensions.)

3. Overhang.
Do you want an overhang on your bar counter? Some home bars are built as “standing bars” with no overhang at all – that’s a typical pub-style approach. This doesn’t mean guests are left standing the whole time; it simply means the bar acts as a stylish serving ledge where people can stand or pull up a stool as needed. Other hosts prefer having an overhang – the countertop extends a bit outward, allowing guests to slide their knees under and sit comfortably on bar stools. An overhang essentially turns your bar into a cozy seating area, if that is what you’re aiming for.

4. Marble/Granite vs. Wooden Top.
Your bar’s countertop material sets the tone for both style and maintenance. Many customers with classic-style bars love the warmth and charm of a polished wooden top – it gives a traditional, inviting feel. On the other hand, some folks prefer granite or marble surfaces because they’re luxurious-looking and extremely durable. Stone tops (like marble or granite) handle spills, scratches, and long-term wear better, making them a smart long-term choice if you expect heavy use. It really comes down to the look you want and how much care you’re willing to give; wood may need a bit more maintenance, while a stone top can be easier to wipe down after a fun night of cocktails.

5. Foot Rails and Arm Rails.
Ever notice that comfy bar at your favorite pub? It probably has a foot rail – a horizontal bar near the floor where you can rest your feet. Many homeowners love adding a foot rail to their custom bar because it gives guests a relaxed, pub-like feel and extra comfort when sitting on a taller stool. You can choose a classic brass or chrome foot rail for a touch of elegance. Similarly, some traditional bars include a rounded arm rail (also called an armrest) along the edge of the bar top. For some this adds an elegant finishing touch while others consider it as an obstacle for guests who want to lean comfortably at the bar.

6. Sink (Wet Bar vs. Dry Bar).
Do you need a sink in your home bar? If you plan on mixing a lot of cocktails or want easy cleanup, a small built-in sink is a very popular request. Adding a sink turns a simple “dry bar” into a full “wet bar.” It’s great for rinsing glasses, washing fruits for garnishes, and keeping things tidy without leaving your guests to go back and forth to the kitchen. Just remember: including a sink will require plumbing access and possibly a bit more space.

7. Lights.
Integrated lighting can really elevate the look and mood of your bar area. Many people ask for built-in lights to spotlight their beautiful bottles and glassware. Imagine the soft glow highlighting your crystal glasses or the shimmer of your favorite whiskey bottles on display – it creates a warm, inviting atmosphere for your guests, almost like a real cocktail lounge at home. Lighting is both practical (helping you see what you’re mixing) and decorative (setting a cozy or classy mood), making it a frequent customization in home bars.

8. Wine Glass Racks and Wine Bottle Racks.
If you’re a wine lover, consider adding specialized wine glass racks (often hanging racks for stemware) and wine bottle storage in your bar. These are common requests from customers who want their bar to double as a mini wine cellar. A dedicated section for wine bottles – like X-shaped wine cubbies or shelves for your favorite vintages – provides both storage and a decorative display. These racks can free up counter space and add a touch of winery charm to your home bar.

9. Space for Appliances.
Think about the appliances you might want in your bar: a mini-fridge for cold drinks and mixers, a wine cooler for your favorite bottles, an ice maker for cocktails, or even a compact dishwasher to handle glasses. By planning ahead and including the right cut-outs for such appliances, you won’t have to run to the kitchen every time you need something chilled or extra ice. If space is limited, pick the one or two appliances you’ll use most often and have your bar built to accommodate them.

10. Space for a TV.
For many, a home bar is an entertainment hub – especially for sports fans or movie lovers. It’s quite common for people to reserve a spot for a TV in their bar area. This could mean leaving a space on the back bar for a flat-screen or planning wall space behind the bar for mounting a TV. If you decide to include a TV, consider where the outlets will be and how to hide any wires for a clean look.

11. Trash Drawers.
Many find it to be an eyesore having a trash can out in the open around their bar. That’s why another customization request is adding a built-in trash drawer or a cabinet for garbage. This way, you have a convenient spot to toss out used napkins, empty bottles, or lime wedges without leaving the bar. It keeps the area neat, and after the party, you can just pull out the concealed bin and take out the trash—super simple and discreet.

12. Beer taps & kegerators
If you or your guests love a fresh pint, adding a beer tap or kegerator is a popular upgrade. It brings that authentic pub feel straight into your home, letting you pour draft beer on demand. You’ll want to plan a bit of extra space for the keg fridge and any needed connections, but it’s worth it for the fun of serving ice-cold beer right from the tap at your own bar.

In summary, these are the top requests we hear when people customize their home bars, each adding comfort, convenience, or style. Many homeowners also like to add a dash of personality to make their bar truly their own. This could be anything from a custom bar sign featuring your family name or a clever bar name, to a decorative mirror behind the bar. These finishing touches don’t change how the bar works, but they give it character and make your home bar feel one-of-a-kind, reflecting your style. The true beauty of a custom bar is that it’s tailored just for you and your lifestyle. So as you plan your own bar, think about the features that will make hosting and relaxing the most enjoyable for you – and have fun designing a bar you’ll love for years to come!
